SWANA Western Chapter Presentation

Kevin McCarthy, Principal at J.R. Miller and Associates, addresses evolving solid waste facility design concepts, including sharing details on the Zero Waste Collaborative’s work, a consortium of consultants that included JRMA and Abbe and Associates, on the City of Berkeley Recycling and Solid Waste Transfer Station Feasibility project completed in November 2019. Mr. McCarthy will also share site plans, renderings, and interactive graphics of the evolution of solid waste facilities into integrated operations that go beyond traditional stand-alone transfer stations or material recovery facilities to integrated waste management facilities. Such integrated facilities showcase the latest technology for material recovery, and organics diversion while incorporating public recycling and reuse opportunities, public art, environmental education, and much more. These new integrated facilities are also designed to meet green building standards, net-zero energy goals, and other community and environmental goals.
