Athens Services Transfer Station & MRF
Sun Valley, CAAthens Services’ state of the art materials recovery facility (MRF) proves the waste collection and recycling services company’s dedication to the communities of Southern California. JRMA created a place that not only is as green as the waste-reduction activity it houses, but showcases technological advancements in waste diversion.
Stand among the administrative offices, walk into the visitors’ area, or sit in the conference room and look out on the MRF’s wide-open layout, made possible by a metal building system that covers the entire operation. Found in the facility are a 70 tph dual-line sorting system created with the latest technology, a bale storage and loadout dock to keep sorted materials ready for transport, and a transfer station where collection trucks bring material into the building. The transfer station utilizes a tunnel system and fast-activating doors to keep odor, dust, and noise inside the MRF, complying with California’s stringent air quality requirements and reducing noise for the administrative employees’ comfort.
Athens and JRMA’s commitment to sustainability manifests itself in LEED certified additions, such as recycled materials used in construction, automatic lighting accompanying an abundance of natural light, and a rooftop photovoltaic system that generates electricity for the building using solar panels. JRMA’s decision to showcase environmental design and Athens’ investment in greater Los Angeles made this new MRF a testament to improved solid waste management.
