Historic Flight Foundation Aviation Museum SFF
Spokane, WAFelts Field, which started operations in 1913, has a deep aviation history as one of the first hubs in the Pacific Northwest. Much of the airport is designated within the Felts Field Historic District with a prevalence of Art Deco architecture evident in many of the buildings, including a previous hospital that later became the main terminal in the 1930’s. It is on this architectural style that the museum was modeled, with a classic barrel vault roof and abundant windows. The base of the building is cast-in-place concrete, hinting at the past, while the balance of the building is finished in metallic architectural panels with an eye towards to the future and the aviation industry in general. The interior of the museum is a large space abundant with natural light, with a skybridge mezzanine that overlooks the building’s interior for visitor observation, with space for events and classes. The museum houses completely operational aircraft from the early days of aviation through WWII, and the first floor includes an open workshop area for visitors to observe the maintenance efforts required to keep those historic aircraft flying.
