Puente Hills MRF and Organics Pre-Processing System

Whittier, CA

The Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County (Districts) owns and operates the Puente Hills Materials Recovery Facility (PHMRF) in Whittier, CA. The facility is approximately 217,000 SF and permitted to receive 4,400 TPD of waste materials. To increase its ability to divert organics from landfill disposal, the Districts has incorporated an organics pre-processing system for source-separated food waste into its facility. The improvements included a receiving bunker, hopper, DODA Bio Separator, make-up water storage tank, and three slurry storage tanks. The system will produce a food waste slurry that will be transported to the Districts’ Joint Water Pollution Control Plant in Carson, CA for anaerobic co-digestion. Biogas from the AD process will be used to generate electricity.
